Proudly Local
Hanleys Passenger Service is a family-owned business based in the Mid North of South Australia and employing an entirely local team.
We give back to the local community by supporting sporting clubs and events across the region.
Humble Beginnings
The Hanley’s have been part of the transport and motor trade industries since 1969. While their family owned and run business has greatly expanded and now spans three generations, they remain true to their local, community-focused roots.
Read on to learn more about the early days of Hanleys Passenger Service and it’s inception from Hanley Auto Repairs.

Beginnings
Wayne Hanley began his mechanical career as an apprentice at A.C. Reads Garage in Gladstone in 1969. The garage underwent a change of ownership and became known as Newitts, where Wayne completed his apprenticeship soon after.

Newitts was primarily a Holden dealership, but also serviced Department of Education buses, giving Wayne experience on a broad range of vehicles early on.

Wayne married Suzanne Bottrall in 1975. He continued working at Newitts and Suzanne joined the team as an office administrator.
Establishment of Hanley Auto Repairs
In September 1985, Wayne and Suzanne purchased the business and established Hanley Auto Repairs.
The workshop remained a Holden Service Centre but expanded to offer mechanical repairs, servicing, and air‑conditioning to all makes and models of cars, 4WD’s, trucks, tractors, and buses. They also specialised in wheel balancing and alignment, with a showroom supplying fuel, oil, tyres, accessories and other parts.

Wayne and Suzanne’s eldest son, Jason, began working at the family business in 1996 studying his mechanical apprenticeship and learning business management from his parents.

Inception of Hanleys Passenger Service
The Hanley’s ties to the transport industry began in 1989, when Hanley Auto Repairs purchased two Department of Education (DECS) bus contracts, with buses included.
This marked the unofficial inception of Hanleys Passenger Service, with the business maintaining its own vehicles and gradually expanding into school and community charters.

Growth continued through the 1990’s and 2000’s, including purchasing their first air‑conditioned school buses in 2002, reflecting the Hanleys’ commitment to passenger comfort.

Jason Hanley became Director in 2007, the same year Hanleys Passenger Service was officially subdivided (better term?) from Hanley Auto Repairs.

By 2010, the fleet included two large Mercedes coaches, three large school buses, and one smaller coaster. The three large buses were used for DECS school runs, while the other two coaches and the smaller bus were used by schools and the wider community for camps, excursions, and other outings.

Modern Days
Hanleys Passenger Service remains proudly family‑owned and operated, directed by Jason Hanley, with Wayne and Suzanne still involved. The next generation has joined the workshop, with Jason’s son, Blake, undertaking his mechanical apprenticeship.
Today, Hanleys Passenger Service operates a fleet of more than 20 modern buses, from 13‑seat vans to 57‑seat coaches, running services from three local schools and providing a wide range of charter options. The business employs 25 local staff, supports young tradespeople through apprenticeships, and hopes to continue its long tradition of serving the Mid North community for many years to come.
